Hohentauern in Winter

Blick vom Skigebiet Hohentauern auf den Bösenstein

Hohentauern is a small but diverse winter sports area. Skiing, cross-country skiing, tobogganing and winter hikes are possible directly from the house. The surrounding mountains are popular destinations for snowshoe hikes and ski tours.

The Hohentauern family ski area is accessible via 4 lifts and offers a total of approx. 11 kilometers of pistes in all levels of difficulty. It reaches up to an altitude of 1750m and offers natural snow slopes and a snowmaking system, as well as interesting deep-snow variants in suitable conditions.

For the little ones, there is a children’s ski school with ski carousel and magic carpet right next to the main entrance.

Cross-country skiing in Hohentauern

On the sunny high plateau of Hohentauern, health and sports trails are offered in the midst of more than “20 two-thousand-meter peaks”. 13 km of cross-country ski trails with two diagonal and one parallel skating trail and a permanently snow-covered central trail (approx. 2.5 km) in the area of the cross-country ski center promise an individual cross-country skiing experience. 5 cross-country trail entrances with information and corresponding parking and refreshment facilities round off the perfect offer.

Entrances

A valid ticket is required to use the cross-country ski trails, which are checked regularly! Daily and weekly tickets are available at the reception of the Almdorf service or at the tourist office. You can get a discount on weekly tickets with your guest card. Ticket machines are located at the cross-country skiing center, at the Moscher sports center and at the start of the Tauernloipe.

Hohentauern

The start is located behind the monument and the general parking lot, approx. 150m from Chalet Triebenstein. The trail leads to the pile-dwelling village and is steep (see photo below, approx. 80 meters in altitude), so it is only suitable for beginners to a limited extent (you should know how to brake). Shortly before the pile-dwelling village, the trail ends at a road, here it is best to walk approx. 50 meters to the trail at the pile-dwelling village (do not follow the footpath to the left!).

Pfahlbaudorf

The pile-dwelling village is approx. 1.1 km away (accessible on foot or by car). From there, a trail on the left behind the parking lot leads to the central trail and the trail center (at Hotel Sonnhof). A detour on the right (sports trail) also takes you to the cross-country skiing center.

Cross-country ski center

There is a store, a rental shop and a cross-country ski school at the cross-country ski center. More information at www.schilanglauf-hohentauern.at. There is also a ticket machine here. The entrance to the central trail is located here, and the sports trail also ends here.

Ski center Moscher

At the Moscher ski center (approx. 1.5 km from Chalet Triebenstein) there is also a store with rental, ski and cross-country ski school as well as a ticket machine at the trail entrance to the central trail. Details at www.moscher.at

Tauernloipe

There is another ticket machine in the south at the entrance to the Tauernloipe (Draxlerhaus).
