Hohentauern is a small but diverse winter sports area. Downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, tobogganing, and winter hiking are all possible directly from the house. The surrounding mountains are popular destinations for snowshoeing and ski touring.
The family-friendly Hohentauern ski area is served by four lifts and offers a total of approximately 11 kilometers of slopes of all difficulty levels. It reaches an altitude of 1750 meters and features natural snow slopes as well as a snowmaking system, and, under suitable conditions, also interesting off-piste options.
For the little ones there is a children's ski school with a ski carousel and magic carpet right at the main entrance.

Cross-country skiing in Hohentauern
On the sunny Hohentauern plateau, surrounded by more than 20 peaks over 2,000 meters high, cross-country ski trails offer a variety of health and fitness options. A 13 km network of trails, including two diagonal tracks and a parallel skating track, along with a permanently snow-covered central trail (approx. 2.5 km) near the trail center, promises a personalized cross-country skiing experience. Five trail access points with information, parking, and refreshment options complete the perfect offering.
Entry points
A permit is required to use the cross-country ski trails. valid ticket Absolutely essential, checks are carried out regularly! Day and week tickets are available. at the reception of the Almdorf service or at the tourist office. You receive a discount on weekly passes with your guest card. Ticket machines are located at the cross-country skiing center, the Moscher sports center, and at the start of the Tauern cross-country ski trail.
Hohentauern
The trailhead is located behind the monument and the general parking lot, approximately 150 meters from Chalet Triebenstein. The trail leads to the stilt village and is downhill (see photo below, approximately 80 meters of elevation change), making it only partially suitable for beginners (you should know how to brake). Shortly before the stilt village, the trail ends at a road; from here, it's best to walk about 50 meters to reach the trail at the stilt village (do not follow the footpath to the left!).
Pile dwelling village
The stilt village is approximately 1.1 km away (accessible on foot or by car). From there, a cross-country ski trail leads to the left behind the parking lot to the central trail and the cross-country ski center (near the Hotel Sonnhof). A detour to the right (sports trail) also leads to the cross-country ski center.
Cross-country skiing center
The cross-country skiing center has a shop, a rental shop, and a cross-country skiing school. More information at www.schilanglauf-hohentauern.at. There is also a ticket machine here. This is the starting point for the central cross-country ski trail, and the sports trail also ends here.
Moscher Ski Center
At the Moscher ski center (approx. 1.5 km from Chalet Triebenstein) there is also a shop with equipment rental, a ski and cross-country skiing school, and a ticket machine at the entrance to the central cross-country ski trail. Details at www.moscher.at
Tauernloipe
There is another ticket machine in the south at the entrance to the Tauern cross-country ski trail (Draxlerhaus).
